name upon. It is a traditional Breton shirt, made in France. A breton
shirt of a heavier weight than the Guy Cotten cream and navy type, this
is due to the carded cotton that is used in the construction of the
garment. In regards to the texture this breton shirt is closer to the
Armor-Lux shirt that we do than any of the others. Perfect for those
cooler evenings.

Guy
Cotten appeared 1964 when Monsieur Guy Cotten and his wife began to
develop their high performance nautical wear. Guy Cotten took
influence from the heavy coated-cotton oilskin jacket used by
fishermen and the double-breasted peacoat used by the Navy of the
time, and from this he created a garment that was practical as well
as durable - the original Guy Cotten Rosbras jacket.
From
the first basic mariners' garments Guy Cotten has grown to specialize
in all manner of yachting, sailing, boating and fishing-wear
including such garments as the 'French Sailor shirt' or 'striped
shirt', or what we call the 'Breton shirt'. True to form this Guy
Cotten product is a high quality garment, made to last.
HISTORY
The
striped Breton shirt as we know it today came into being shortly
following the Act of France of 27th March 1858, which introduced the
Navy and White striped knitted shirt as the uniform for all the
seamen of the French Navy. The official striped navy shirt or French
sailor shirt soon became more generally a working mariner's shirt or
striped nautical shirt, as it was adopted by many seafarers and
sailors across the region of Northern France. It was said that when a
sailor had fallen into the sea, the distinctive block pattern of
stripes of the Breton shirt made him easier to spot amidst the many
blurred colours of the waves.
